Warner viser smakebiter av den unike 2021-menyen

Filmselskapet har som hovedpoeng at de lanserer alle filmene på sin egen strømmetjeneste, HBO MAX, samme dag som de har kinopremiere.

Tross flere ulike eksperimenter med kinofilmlanseringer i 2020, grunnet koronaepedemiens nedstengninger av mange land, har ingen filmstudio tatt skrittet så langt som Warner gjør i 2021. At kinofilmer skal lanseres såkalt «day and date» har vært et omdiskutert tema i ti-femten år i Hollywood, og nå skjer det altså.

De begynte konseptet allerede på slutten av 2020, med Wonder Woman 1984. Den filmen sørget for en dobling av abonnenter til HBO MAX, som endte på 17,2 millioner i fjerde kvartal 2020.

I 2021 blir alle kinofilmer tilgjengelig på HBO MAX i 31 dager – for prisen et ordinært abonnement koster, mens de samtidig er på de kinoene som kan vise dem. Dette gjelder kun i USA. Hva som skjer når HBO MAX erstatter HBO i andre land, eksempelvis HBO Nordic i Norden, vet vi ikke. Men Warner har tidligere sagt at de kun skal gjøre det på denne måten i USA.

I den nye korte trailerfilmen viser Warner Bros. for første gang noen små klipp fra kommende filmer, herunder Clint Eastwood i Cry Macho og Will Smith i King Richard, samt korte klipp fra storfilmer som Denis Villeneuves Dune, Godzilla vs. Kong, The Suicide Squad, The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It, med flere.

Her ser man også klipp fra David Chase film-forfilm til TV-serien Sopranos, som heter The Many Saints of Newark. Denne er nå utsatt fra mars til september 2021. Den unge Tony Soprano spilles av Michael Gandolfini, sønn av Tony Soprano-skuespiller James Gandolfini.

Flere av Warners filmskapere er «opprørte» over strategien, herunder Denis Villeneuve, som mener at dette vil ødelegge den planlagte Dune-franchisen. Også The Matrix-regissør Lana Wachowski (tidligere Larry) er sterkt kritisk.
